Upcoming Workshops!

Dear Readers,

If you look carefully, you’ll see a few new menu items here on the Dana Levy Yoga website. It’s all in the service of an upcoming workshop!

On the weekend of April 22-23, Paul Linden will be teaching “STABLE BODY BALANCED MIND: Embodied Peacemaking Workshops” in Salt Lake City…

Who is Paul Linden?

PAUL LINDEN, Ph.D., is a specialist in body awareness education, the developer of Being In Movement® mind-body education, and founder of the Columbus Center for Movement Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Education, a sixth degree black belt in Aikido and a first degree black belt in Karate, and he is an instructor of the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education.  He has extensive experience working with a variety of clients such as musicians, athletes, pregnant women, adult survivors of child abuse, children with attention disorders, and business people both in the U.S. and abroad. He has taught Embodied Peacemaking in Ecuador, Argentina, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Poland, Germany and Israel. He is the author of a number of e-books, among which are:

  • Winning is Healing: Body Awareness and Empowerment for Abuse Survivors
  • Embodied Peacemaking: Body Awareness, Self-Regulation and Conflict Resolution
  • Hands-On Teaching: Enhancing Body Awareness and Self-Regulation
  • Feeling Aikido: Body Awareness Training as a Foundation for Aikido Practice
  • Breakfast Essays: Brief Writings on Body Awareness and Life

What are the workshops about?

Paul’s workshops offer experiential practices by which we can work with intention, muscle tone, posture, breathing and movement to develop a mind/body state of expansiveness, calm alertness and compassionate power. These body awareness skills enable us to maintain a peaceful and stable body and mind, which provides a foundation for finding harmonious and productive ways of handling difficulties.

Why is this important to me?

When we are challenged, threatened or hurt, we naturally react with contraction or collapse of breathing, posture, attention and movement. These distress responses give rise to feelings such as fear, anger, shock, resignation, or numbness. These powerful physical responses hijack the rational mind and the compassionate heart, and they move people toward uncoordinated, oppositional and ineffective behavior.

Who can join the workshops?

These workshops are open to anyone who wishes to manage conflict (including inner conflict) more peacefully or who teaches others to do so.  The skills are particularly appropriate for educators, parents, business people, lawyers, peace activists, psychotherapists, yoga/bodywork practitioners, somatic educators and martial artists.

How much does it cost?

  • The Full Workshop (12 hours) is $180.00
  • The Main Workshop (10 hours) is $160.00
  • The Mini-Workshop (2 hours) is $32.00

When are the workshops? How do I register?

Why is Dana bringing Paul to Salt Lake City?

Dana studied aikido with Paul in Columbus, Ohio from 1993-1997. Paul’s techniques of developing body awareness and dealing with conflict continue to influence her teaching and personal practice.

But more importantly, I feel strongly that this is the work we need to do in this world, at this time.

I look forward to sharing this meaningful, educational experience with you!

A New Year Has Begun!

A New Year Has Begun!

…Bringing with it resolutions and expectations, a covey of fluttering emotions, and the usual desires, dreams, dramas and demands. In the cold darkness of winter, we can recommit to our yoga practice, find steadiness in the melee, stay grounded in the truth of our experience, and reach out to expand fully into the future.

I’d like to thank you all for a wonderful 2016. It is truly a pleasure to work with each person who walks into the studios and classrooms. It’s inspiring to see you walk into your first class and rediscover the experience of being in your body, comfortable or uncomfortable. To help you discover a greater capacity to deal with life’s challenges by taking your yoga practice off the mat and into your daily life. To see you rest in the initial discomfort of a new asana or new concept, find comfort in the discomfort, and move forward steadily. To share your hopes, dreams, fears, losses, failures and successes. Each one of us walks the same ground on different paths. Thank you for sharing your journey, and I look forward to working with you in 2017.
Warm regards,
Dana

Thanksgiving Week Schedule

In recent weeks, my students have dug deep to find their love and power*. I am so very proud of each person who steps through the door of the studio to practice. As the first of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras states, “Atha yoganusasanam”. Simply translated, it means, “And now, the practice of yoga begins.”

“Atha”, or “now” brings us to this moment. “Yoga” is the study of who we are, where we are, and how we can bring about change to ourselves in order to know clearly how our actions affect those around us, and vice versa. “Anusasanam” is the act of following through in our commitment to practice.

So, as we commit to our practice, it also commits to us. Our practice prepares us for the ups and downs, the fluctuations of the “outer” world, by teaching us to be present in the face of challenges. We practice for the hard times, not the easy ones.

In regard to practice, please note the following schedule for Thanksgiving Week:

  • Monday, November 21: 9:15-10:45 “All Levels Hatha Yoga” with Dana at Mindful Yoga Collective.
  • Wednesday, November 23: No class. Please attend Roz’s class at 7:30am at Mindful.
  • Friday, November 25: 9:15-10:45 “All Levels Hatha Yoga” with Roz at Mindful. Please join Roz for class!
  • Saturday, November 26: No class.
  • Regular schedule resumes from Monday, November 28 at Mindful.

Please enjoy the holiday, take some time to reflect on your own practices–not only yoga, but those practices which bring you home to yourself–and allow both the blessings and your gratitude to seep through your pores, steep in your marrow, slide through your veins, and sing through your breath.

Gratefully,

Dana

*As one of my teachers, Paul Linden, states, “Power without love is brutal and destructive; love without power is weak and ineffective.” He provides some excellent, simple physical tools for discovering the balance of love and power here. (If you prefer video, click here!) It’s called, “Embodied Peacemaking”.

Hello, November!

Halloween is just around the corner, and November looms large. Skiers are looking for the first powder day, bikers are making their cold-season plans, hikers are polishing their snowshoes in anticipation. Yet, the air remains a tad warm, and the sun still warms our faces in midday. How I love the changing of the seasons in Utah, and all there is to delight in!

As November arrives, a few reminders:

  1. Register for the Nov. 13 (Sunday) Snowbird Experiential Retreat from 1-4pm. Info and registration link (this retreat is sponsored by the University of Utah Lifelong Learning Program) appear on the “Events & Workshops” page.
  2. Saturday classes are ON for Nov. 5, 12, and 19, but there’s NO CLASS on NOV. 26! Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend.
  3. Speaking of Thanksgiving….any subs or cancellations during the holiday week (Weds., Nov. 23 and Fri., Nov. 25 will be announced right here, so keep checking back!
  4. Peering into December (!), Leslie Howard’s workshops at Mindful Yoga Collective will be held on Dec. 3 & 4. Please register soon–spaces are going fast! More details and registration info available here, on the Mindful website. Leslie is a fantastic, experienced, knowledgeable teacher who can make you comfortable with uncomfortable topics, and let you laugh while you’re being enlightened! The workshops are:
    1. “Pelvic Floor Workshop” (women only) is Saturday & Sunday, 9-12 am
    2. “Cranky Hips & the Lower Back Blues” (open to all) is Saturday, 2-4pm
  5. I’m currently developing some sweet prop workshops. Chairs, belts, blocks…stay tuned!

Looking forward to seeing you at the studio, around town, or on the trail!
